The potential of rice fortification in Indonesia is immense. With rice being a staple food for most Indonesians and its consumption on the rise, as per BPS data (2022), household rice consumption in 2021 ranged from 64 to 93 kg per capita per year.

The Indonesian Nutrition Foundation for Food Fortification (KFI) has n been a active member of Technical Commission 67-11 for Certain Fresh Foods. KFI has actively participated in every stage of developing fortified rice kernel standards named Rice Kernel Fortificants.

Their involvement has been crucial in presenting recommendations for the types and nutritional content of fortified rice kernels, based on analyzing the gaps in the micronutrient needs of targeted populations, kernel processing, mixing processes with rice, shelf life, handling, and consumer acceptance. In addition to the specifications for fortified rice kernels, KFI has actively participated in discussions regarding quality requirements, packaging, storage, and labeling of fortified rice kernel products.

KFI is keenly aware of the urgency and significance of the finalization of the Rice Kernel Fortificant standard, which is nearing the Consensus stage. We believe that this milestone will significantly strengthen our efforts to address micronutrient deficiencies and improve the overall health of the community.
