The Indonesian Nutrition Foundation for Food Fortification (KFI) organized a capacity-building activity to enhance the skills required for processing the National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas) data to support the formulation of evidence-based policy recommendations. The event was held in collaboration with the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), which played a vital role as the primary facilitator, offering training on effectively using Susenas data.

The training took place over three days, from Monday to Wednesday, August 19-21, 2024, featuring three expert speakers from BPS: Amiek Chamami, Ofi Ana Sari, and Maarif Ibu Khaer. Seven KFI staff members participated in the in-person workshop at KFI’s office in the Kompleks Bappenas, Jl. Siaga Raya, Pejaten Barat, Jakarta Selatan. The event's primary goal was to strengthen the KFI staff's capacity to manage and analyze Susenas data, which is crucial in formulating accurate and evidence-based policy recommendations.

As the organization responsible for providing Susenas data, BPS delivered comprehensive training that included data processing, statistical software use, and interpreting results to support policy analysis. Participants were introduced to the fundamentals of Susenas, focusing on Susenas Consumption and Expenditure data, and were guided on how to create tabulations and indicators. Additionally, the training involved hands-on data processing with practical exercises, followed by evaluation and feedback from the facilitators. BPS also guides utilizing data to produce more targeted and practical policy recommendations. KFI emphasizes using reliable, valid data in decision-making and policy development processes.

Susenas data is one of BPS's flagship survey products and is widely used by various parties within and outside the agency. Despite its broad availability, the use of microdata from Susenas, particularly from the Consumption and Expenditure (KP) surveys, remains relatively limited. Many institutions only rely on pre-prepared tables available on the BPS website or request data through inter-agency communication. This training aimed to enhance participants' understanding and ability to process Susenas microdata properly, resulting in more accurate and reliable policy recommendations.

KFI remains committed to continuously improving its internal data processing capacity and that of its partners to support better, data-driven policies. KFI also hopes to maintain its collaboration with BPS in future efforts to improve the quality of policy recommendations.
